Having dental insurance can take a huge burden off of your shoulders. When you have to pay for dental procedures out of pocket, they can be steep. Many people believe they can’t afford insurance and end up letting their teeth rot away. We are here to tell you that there are many affordable dental insurance options out there for you to take advantage of.

We highly suggest starting out with finding the right plan to fit your dental needs. There are three main types of programs which we will discuss in detail below. Once you decide on the type of program that you want to get, it’s time to obtain some dental insurance quotes. You should look online and offline for providers of the type of dental insurance plan that you desire. Get multiple quotes and compare them before making a decision on which provider you will go with.

 Rhode Island Dental Programs

There are three main types of dental programs that you can take advantage of as a resident of the great state of Rhode Island. These include PPOs, Indemnity, and Discount Plans. It’s a good idea to take a look at the benefits and disadvantages of each one of these plans so that you can figure out which one is the best for your lifestyle. Let’s take a closer look at each of these three programs below.

 PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations)

This type of plan is established around a specific network of providers. Specific dentists will offer up their dental services to the Organization members at a discounted price. Dentists will do this to gain access to the large pool of patients that are members of the PPO.

Under this program, you would have to see dentists that are named to be in the network. If you seek out-of-network care, you will be responsible for the fees or a large portion of the fees for the service. This dental program does require a waiting period before the insurance company will pay for certain procedures. Nationwide and HumanaOne are two examples of PPO providers.

 Indemnity Plans

This is the traditional style of dental insurance that most people are familiar with. The indemnity insurance provider will give you a set fee of the percentage they will pay for each type of dental procedure. Their fee schedule is developed based off of the reasonable price for the service in your specific area. This means that you may get a different percentage of coverage for the same procedure than another individual will in a different town.

Depending on the indemnity provider and your dental health profession, you may or may not have to pay the entire cost of the procedure up front. In some cases, the dentist’s office will bill the insurance provider for the estimated amount that is owed based off of the fee schedule. In other cases, you may have to pay the bill and get reimbursed by the insurance provider. This is something you want to ensure you know about your program before deciding it is the right program for you. Ameritas and Encore Dental are two common providers of indemnity dental insurance in the state of Rhode Island.

 Discount Plans

These plans are commonly used by individuals who need coverage quick. For these plans, you simply enroll and start enjoying your benefits right away. This program provides you with a discount card that allows you to receive unlimited dental care at a cheaper than retail price. The discounts are noted in a provider’s fee schedule.

You should highly familiarize yourself with the fee schedule, as it’s very likely you will have to pay the dental professional the remaining balance owed at the time of the service. In addition, make sure that the dentist you are familiar with uses this plan. Only select providers may honor the discount card, so you need to take that into consideration as well. Patriot, Aetna Dental, and Dentalsave are all providers of discount dental insurance plans across the state of Rhode Island.

Now that you have a better idea of the programs you can enroll in for dental coverage, it’s time to decide which one is right for you. Go out and get at least five different quotes to ensure that you get the most amount of coverage at the cheapest price possible.
