Dental care can be as simple as a biannual checkup or as extravagant as needing a full set of dentures. Although costs of biannual checkups may be affordable on your budget when it comes to the more orally invasive procedures the prices can be way out of your price range. This is where dental insurance can help. With this type of insurance, you can get access to a wide range of oral health services for less than the retail price.

There are three different types of dental insurance plans that you can obtain in the state of Wisconsin. These include Indemnity Plans, Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), and Discount Dental Plans. All individuals are eligible for each program. Each has their pros and cons. We suggest you read over the descriptions below so you can get a better idea of the type of coverage that you may need.

 Types Of Dental Insurance Coverage

 Indemnity Plans

This is what most people think of when they hear about dental insurance. An indemnity plan is a fee-for-service plan that makes the costs related to receiving dental services very simple to understand for the average joe. When you sign up for an indemnity oral health plan you will be given a fee schedule.

This fee schedule shows the percentage of the cost that the provider will cover of each type of dental service. Users of this plan may visit any dental health professional they wish to without having to worry about whether they are part of a network or not.

Because individuals have access to any dental professional, they in turn, must foot the bill upfront at the time of the dental service. This is because the indemnity provider doesn’t have a pre-established relationship with the dentist. You will need to send the paid bill to your insurance provider, who will then send you a reimbursement check for the amount that they owe for the services performed.

 Preferred Provider Organizations

These organizations, also referred to as PPOs for short, establish a network of dentists who will provide oral health services for their members. This in-network care is provided at a discounted rate. Also, the PPO establishes a maximum amount for each service for the dentist so that members are aware of the cost of the services prior to having them done.

PPOs will cover some out-of-network services, however, their costs will typically be significantly higher than in-network providers. If you have a dentist that you are comfortable using in your hometown, we highly suggest making sure they are on the provider list for the potential insurance company that you are thinking of getting a PPO through. The most widely used preferred provider organizations in the state of Wisconsin are Nationwide, HumanaOne, and Ameritas.

 Discount Dental Plans

These programs are designed for those who need immediate coverage for dental services. They also work great for those who are looking to supplement the coverage from their other dental health insurance plan. With discount dental plans, as soon as you sign up you can head off to the dentist for work. Other programs require a waiting period before you may seek dental services.

To obtain this type of plan you will need to pay a fixed monthly premium to the discount provider. In exchange, the will send you a discount dental card that you can use at any eligible dentist. This card gives you access to exclusive discounts on many dental services.

The amount of the discount that you will receive with your card highly depends on the discount dental plan provider that you use. Each will have different rates and various providers that accept their discount card. Some common providers of this type of oral health coverage include Aetna Dental, Careington International, and Patriot Health Inc.

Now that you have a good idea of which plan may be the right choice for you, it’s time to start comparing program prices. You should check with some local and online dental insurance providers. Read over each plan so you can compare their coverages as well as prices with other plan providers. Understanding dental insurance doesn’t have to be that difficult.
